Toronto and Markham artist now gearing up for business

I have given notice to Markham Arts Council and am unfortunately stepping down as their bookkeeper. Met many wonderful artistic people over the last few years and will miss their interactions. However, I am now painting full time, along with graphic design and voice talent freelance work. There just don't seem to be enough hours in each day to fit everything in that I want to do, so I'm usually up before dawn!

Also, just to give you all a heads up that my next art exhibition will be in July, 2012 in Unionville, at the McKay Centre, which is run by the Varley Art Gallery. Lots to do until then, and hope to see you there!

I love waterfalls and there are beautiful ones all around the world. I have just finished this painting in acrylic on canvas. 24" x 24" with bevelled edges. It is my depiction of the waterfalls in Coorg (Kodagu), India. What a beautiful place to refresh and meditate.

I just recently had the pleasure of visiting the kindergarten classes at Unionville
Meadows Public School. I was able to share what it was like to be an artist, and in particular, we discussed abstract art. The children were so descriptive with their perceptions of various pieces of the art I brought in to show them. We all had a fun time and I hope their creativity keeps getting a chance to shine and grow!

That visit sends a message that we should encourage the arts to grow in Markham for the future of the children. Thanks very much for inviting me to speak!

This painting started out to be totally abstract, but then when I stepped back and looked at it from a distance, it had taken on shapes of brush and/or perhaps trees in the distance. I thought it looked like hills in the fall background, yet someone else thought it looked like a rugged beach coast, so you decide what you think it looks the most like. That's the fun of painting!

Avoid This Biggest Mistake In Hanging Artwork

I have recently seen one of the most common mistakes that people make when hanging their artwork, and that is simply hanging it too high. After researching several art and home decorating sites on the internet, it seems that the concensus is to ideally hang art at 57" up from the floor. The middle or center of the artwork should end up at 57". Therefore your nail or hook will be higher depending on the size of your artwork.

A group of artwork or prints would be taken as a whole and again, the centerpoint would be at 57".

Someone recently asked me why I like to paint. The answer to that is that something inside me wants to express the beauty and energy of life that surrounds us every day! I consider it a learning experience and note the things that do not work, and then, if I don't want to work on it anymore, I paint over it, add some thicker textures here and there, and voila, turn it into a great abstract! Was up north last weekend, and while the sun's rays were still able to warm the almost fall day, I was happy to spend a few hours painting the well known beaver dam area of New Liskeard. It's about 2 hours north of North Bay and nine miles west of the Quebec border. This area is known as Pete's Dam.

As an artist and a person who reads a lot in this day and age, I was wondering if anyone else shares my observations regarding the two main blogging programs out there. I have seen many sites on Wordpress and it seems that most of them are very difficult to read. The font type size is very small, and with the volume of wordage we have to read each day, my eyes grow tired squinting or trying to adjust font sizes continuously to a comfortable level. That's why I enjoy using and reading Goggle's blogger and enjoy reading other people's site who also use it. So, there is my observation, and here is raising a glass to reading on the web that is more enjoyable!!!!

To me, the sight and smell of lilacs really means that spring has arrived here in Canada. When driving across Ontario last week, the miles and miles of lilacs growing along the country roads was a joy to see! I picked a few sprigs and put them in a vase, and have now painted them to enjoy all year long. This is a large painting done in acrylic on canvas, size 36" x 30".

SAFETY MESSAGE from Monika Dickson

Everyone should take 5 minutes to read this. It may save your life or a loved one's life. In daylight hours, refresh yourself of these things to do in an emergency situation...This is for you, and for you to share with your wife, your children, & everyone you know. It never hurts to be careful in this crazy world we live in.

 1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do :

The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do!  

2.. Learned this from a tourist guide.

If a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.

Toss it away from you....Chances are that he is more interested

in your wallet and/or purse than you, and he will go for the wallet/purse.

RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car,

kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole

and start waving like crazy..The driver won't see you, but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON'T DO THIS!) The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE..   If someone is in the car with a gun to your head DO NOT DRIVE OFF, Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car. Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat they will get the worst of it. As soon as the car crashes bail out and run. It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:

A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side floor, and in the back seat.

B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle,

and the passenger side.. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)

6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.

Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot.

This is especially true at NIGHT!)

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control,

ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target)

4 in 100 times; and even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ.

RUN, Preferably in a zig -zag pattern!

8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP It may get you raped, or killed.

Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked 'for help' into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted  his next victim.

9. Another Safety Point:

Someone just told me that her friend heard a crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police because it was late and she thought it was weird.. The police told her 'Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door..' The lady then said that it sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that it would crawl to the street and get run over. The policeman said, 'We already have a unit on the way, whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.' He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off a baby.. He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by women saying that they hear baby's cries outside their doors when they're home alone at night.

10. Water scam!

If you wake up in the middle of the night to hear all your taps outside running or what you think is a burst pipe, DO NOT GO OUT TO INVESTIGATE! These people turn on all your outside taps full blast so that you will go out to investigate and then attack.  Stay alert, keep safe, and look out for your neighbors!

Life keeps changing however, and over the last two years I have been able to concentrate more on my painting. To supplement my art habit, I have to do other things which mainly involve using my business background skills for things like anti-money laundering, bookkeeping, providing health and wellness products and other services to help my clients. I enjoy helping people succeed and making their lives easier. I've been told this trait also comes through in my art by helping people feel uplifted, calmer, and even helped some people acquire a sense of healing when contemplating my art.
